Figures

Figure 1: University plans over time by socioeconomic background

This Sankey Diagram shows how students’ plans for university change over time, by the level of deprivation of the school they attend. School deprivation is measured using the proportion of pupils eligible for Free School Meals (FSM).

The Sankey Diagram uses three stages:

1. School deprivation

Students are grouped according to the FSM level of their school, which is divided into four categories:

  • Q1 + Q2 (least FSM)
  • Q3
  • Q4
  • Q5 (most FSM)

2. Likelihood of university application (Wave 1)

Students report how likely they are to apply to university:

  • Very likely
  • Fairly likely
  • Unlikely

3. Preferred university destination (Wave 2)

Students report their preferred destination:

  • Russell Group / Pre-92 universities
  • Post-92 universities
  • Applying but not decided
  • Not planning to apply

Differences by school deprivation

Students from less deprived schools (Q1+Q2) are more likely to:

  • Say they are very likely to apply in Wave 1
  • Prefer Russell Group / Pre-92 universities

Students from more deprived schools (Q5) are more likely to:

  • Say they are fairly likely or unlikely to apply
  • Prefer Post-92 universities,
  • Be undecided, or
  • Say they are not planning to apply

The figure illustrates how university intentions and preferred destinations differ by school socioeconomic background, with clearer and more selective university plans more common among students from less deprived schools.
